During February 2007 'Alexandra' is anchored on the
Baron River in front of the capital of 'Tropical
North
Queensland' Cairns. A tourist destination with many
hotels, restaurants and shopping centres. In the morning a fleet of
luxury motorboats leave the piers for one of more day's trips to the
islands close to shore and to the outer reefs. Also busses, campervans
and cars head north to the rainforests near Cape Tribulation or the
higher grounds of the Atherton Tablelands.
We hire a campervan and visit the Cape Tribulation
National Park with several very interesting and beautiful walks. In the
Tablelands we taste the fresh coffee and tea on the premises of the
plantations themselves. We try to find platypuses, feed rock wallaby's
and make some more unexpected and pleasant walks. Back on board we see
in two weeks time three huge cruise ships coming up the river to Cairns
where they moor along the jetty near the Casino annex wildlife zoo (in
the dome of the casino).
With very light winds we sail south with a beautiful
stop-over in Zoë Bay on Hinchinbrook Island, the most southerly area
with rainforest. To reach the waterfall at Zoë Bay you have to watch the
crocodiles while crossing the stream. Magnetic Island is situated close
to the shore of Townville with wide and beautiful views from the
commander post and the former signal house, both parts of the military
basis in WWII. Till close after Easter we are moored in the Breakwater
marina in Townsville and from there we head further on south (Whitsunday
islands).
